“One of cinema’s most adventurous artists.” – Martin Scorsese

A monumental work of contemporary cinema, Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr’s seminal seven-and-a-half hour masterpiece is back on our screens with this stunning new 4K restoration.

One of the world’s most respected and transformative filmmakers, Tarr made his international breakthrough with this astonishing, singular examination of time and human decline set in a Hungarian village during the dying days of communism.

Sátántangó unfolds in twelve distinct movements, alternating forwards and backwards in time, echoing the structure of a tango dance. It tells the tale of Irimiás, a man thought to have died long ago, who returns to a desolate Hungarian community just as its desperate inhabitants are planning to escape. He predicts better times ahead. But he’s a false prophet, and what unfolds is a nightmarish vision of a decaying social order.

Justly lauded by critics and audiences, few films of the past quarter century have attained the kind of venerable status that Sátántangó has achieved. Its reputation as one of cinema’s greatest achievements has seen it transcend into something akin to a sacred object - one that's revered and studied with as much devotion as perplexity.
