Deaf Conversations about Cinema: Lee
Please note: This event took place in Sept 2024
Join us at the 17:50 screening of Lee on Mon 16 Sept which will feature Descriptive Subtitles and an introduction from Alejandro Acín, Founder Director of IC Visual Lab & Creative Director of Bristol Photo Festival. This will be followed at 19:45 by a post screening discussion in the Café & Bar with audience members and Alejandro. The evening will be hosted by Deaf artist, performer and filmmaker David Ellington and will feature BSL interpretation throughout.
Lee tells the story of American photographer Lee Miller (portrayed by Kate Winslet), who was determined to document the truth of the Nazi regime, in spite of the odds stacked against her.
Miller defied the expectations and rules of the time and travelled to Europe to report from the frontline. There, in part as a reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice to the voiceless.
What Lee captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific. Her photographs of the war, its victims and its consequences remain among the most significant and historically important of the Second World War.
Please join us after the screening in the Café & Bar for an informal discussion, which will include BSL interpretation. You’ll receive 10% off drinks with your cinema ticket – so grab a glass or a mug of something and let us know your thoughts about Lee.
