Media Archaeology in the Archives

Media Archaeology in the Archives

part of Lunchtime Talks

Talk

Please note: This event ended on 28 March 2025

At the beginning of March 2025, artist Frances Bossom transformed Arnolfini's Dark Studio into an office circa 1990s with fax machines, an electric typewriter and telephones. Visitors were invited to make phone calls, send a fax and use the typewriter.

Alongside this analogue technology were displays of documents produced by Arnolfini's Gallery Educators in the 1970s - 1990s (before the organisation connected to the internet in 1996). Frances also presented video and photographic work she produced as part of her research.

In this talk, Frances will be discussing how media archaeology can open up research in institutional archives and institutional memory and what happens when you perform administration with old media.
