Jazz great Sun Ra (earth name: Herman P. Blount) knew a little something about showmanship: not only was he a brilliant and prescient composer, but he wrapped his music in an elaborate quasi-Egyptian mythology that made for colourful theatre. To help celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth we are pleased to present this rare documentary (named as one of the 50 greatest music films ever by Time Out), which presents him as both philosopher and inspired leader of his most famous band, the Intergalactic Arkestra. Testimonials from his sidemen are intercut with concert footage shot in Baltimore and Philadelphia (among the tunes performed are 'Astro Black' and 'We Travel Spaceways') and sessions with the man himself, filmed in the Egyptian room of a museum. He look intently into the camera as he expands on his intergalactic Afrocentrist worldview. Is he serious? His mischievious smile says it all...
Followed by a Funk Upon A Time party (from 22:00 - late in the Café/Bar) presented by Ujima Radio's Universal Magnetic Show Crew, with Afrofuturist visuals by Adam The Media Assassin, and sonic-time-travel provided by DJ's Awkward & Benjamine One. Join us for a funktastic voyage through the musical cosmos from Sun Ra to Ras-G - it's going to be out of this world. Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise ticket holders will receive priority entry to the Funk Upon A Time Party.
Plus an introduction to Afrofuturism with Edson Burton, Ytasha L Womack, and Floyd Webb (who will be joining us live from Chicago via Skype).
Ticket prices: £8.00 full / £6.50 concessions. Tickets include priority entry to the After Party.
