For his feature debut, Joe Cornish - of comedy duo Adam and Joe - combined his love of 1980s creature capers like Gremlins with a more contemporary concern: fear of teenage hoodies. His gutsy, funny and scary sci fi centres on a multicultural crew of street kids who take on monsters from outer space. Lead by Moses (John Boyega - soon to be seen in the new Star Wars films), his gang are interrupted mugging a pretty nurse (Jodie Whittaker) by the unexpected appearance of a fearsome, blue-fanged alien. When they inadvertently kill it, they provoke an alien invasion of their estate: together, they must put aside their racial, gender and class differences for the sake of a common cause - saving Planet Earth. With a pounding score by Basement Jaxx, brilliant performances from its young stars, and an undercurrent of political rage and class consciousness, this is no lazy sci fi-does-gangsta parody. It's inner city versus outer space, and we're not taking any prisoners.
With an introduction by curator Dr Edson Burton.
Screening with short Robots of Brixton (Kibwe Tavare, 2011).
