Bill Murray gives a deliciously droll and idiosyncratic performance as Don, an aging bachelor who is undertaking a hesitant quest for a child he may have fathered 20 years before. With the encouragement of his amateur-sleuth neighbour Winston, Don embarks on a cross-country trek in search of clues from four former flames. Unannounced visits to each of these remarkable women (Jessica Lange, Sharon Stone, Tilda Swinton and Frances Conroy) seem not to shake Don’s po-faced reserve but certainly offer surprises and a series of exquisite comic episodes. Beautifully shot, this is a lilting bittersweet tale that offers further proof of Murray’s leading man status and of US indie auteur Jarmusch‘s maverick genius.
