The colossal talents of Christopher Nolan go anything but gently into that good night with his latest mind expanding, time bending, frontier crossing sci-fi epic, a singular piece of filmmaking that is both intimate and cosmic in scope, whilst paying due homage to the lynchpins of the genre.

With a dying earth, evoking images of the 1930’s dust bowl, facing the prospect of mass depopulation in the wake of a devastating crop blight, the frontier of human endeavour has been forced to dedicate itself completely to agrarian pursuits. As humanity faces the prospect of imminent starvation, former pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a loving father of two, remains convinced that the answer to human salvation lies in the possibilities available to them beyond Earth’s boundaries. When convinced to take part in an interstellar mission alongside a team of intrepid explorers, he leaves behind his family to find the answers to the somewhat daunting evolutionary questions of who we are, why we are here and what ultimately is our future in the cosmos. True to form, Nolan’s answers both challenge and thrill in equal intoxicating measure.

With nods along the way Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Robert Zemeckis’s Contact, Interstellar is bold, ambitious, big budget filmmaking. A love letter to the species which can surely take its place amongst the greats of the sci-fi pantheon.
