The Quay Brothers Retrospective + In Conversation
classified 12A Spart of Bristol Festival of Puppetry
Please note: This was screened in Aug 2015
Identical twins Stephen and Timothy Quay are internationally acclaimed artist filmmakers and designers who have been drawing upon a rich tapestry of European literature and art (such as Franz Kafka and Bruno Schulz) as a catalyst for their visionary, surreal work for over thirty years. They have produced features, music videos (including Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer), dance films, shorts and documentaries, and have designed sets for opera, drama and concert performances.
At this special event we invite you to join us for a retrospective of the Quays' works, including their seminal stop-motion puppet animation The Street of Crocodiles and Maska, based upon work by Solaris author Stanislaw Lem.
With screenings of:
- Maska (2010) 24mins
- In Absentia (2000) 20mins
- Stille Nachte III (1992) 4mins
- Street of Crocodiles (1986) 21mins
The screening will be followed by a rare opportunity to hear the Quays talk about their puppets, their worlds and the language of dance with BFP15 Film Curator Joseph Wallace.
Don’t miss The Quay Brothers installation on The Redcliffe Bascule Bridge Control Room: peer through the dusty windows and glimpse a miniature world of objects that play with the arc of the sun from dawn to dusk. This installation will be one of the first times that the UK public will be able to explore the Quays' puppetry and visual language outside the context of their films.
