Director biography:
Ursula Meier is currently one of the main representatives of Swiss and European arthouse cinema. She started her career more than 20 years ago with the short film Le Songe d'Isaac (Isaac’s Dream), selected in competition at the Locarno film festival in 1994, while she was a student at the Institut des Arts de Diffusion (IAD) in Belgium. In 1998 she releases the short film Des Heures Sans Sommeil (Sleepless), also selected at Locarno and awarded at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival the following year. In 2001 her third short film Tous À Table (Table Manners) premieres at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival and is awarded with 3 prizes. Her feature films Home (2008) and Sister (2012) have received international acclaim, particularly at the Cannes Film Festival for the first one and at the Berlinale where Sister was awarded a Silver Bear. This retrospective focuses on her first three short films while her latest short film Quiet Mujo (part of the omnibus feature film Bridges of Sarajevo) is selected in the international competition.
Meier's feature film Sister will also screen as part of Encounters on Sat 19 Sept at 18:00 as part of the Shorts2Features strand.
