Step back in time and into the stylish romanticism and candy colours of Wes Anderson’s famous Grand Budapest Hotel, complete with luxurious baths, yawning lobbies and a concierge service that is the envy of 1930’s Europe.
A hint of the bittersweet romanticism of an Ernst Lubitsch movie, the freewheeling comedy of the Marx Brothers and the adventures of a Stefan Zweig novel are all wrapped in this particular hotel’s gorgeous production design and daily operations - at the helm of which we find legendary hotel concierge Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes). When Gustave finds himself bequeathed a valuable painting when wealthy benefactor Madame D (Tilda Swinton) passes away - much to the fury of her son Dmitri (Adrien Brody) – both he and his trusted lobby boy Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori) must hatch a plan to hide the painting and evade both Dmitri, his cronies and the authorities.
With a glittering ensemble cast including Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton, Jude Law and Saoirse Ronan this is a high kitsch, playful and ironic lament for the world of yester-year. A decadent and glamorous fin-de siècle of a place that time forgot, that you won’t want to check out of anytime soon.
