The 10th edition of Afrika Eye Festival opens with a masterpiece of African cinema set in the village of Colobane, Senegal. Senegalese director Mambety adapts a timeless parable of human greed into a biting satire of modern Africa – betraying the hopes of independence for the false promises of Western materialism.
Linguère Ramatou is a beautiful, young woman from a sleepy village who falls in love with a young man. When she becomes pregnant and he denies paternity so he can marry a wealthy wife, the villagers drive the disgraced Linguère from her home. 30 years later she returns as a millionaire, full of wrath and revenge. This is a dark comedy with a catch - she wants the villagers to kill the man who broke her teenage heart.
Considered by many to be maverick director Djibril Diop Mambety’s best work, this cinematic masterpiece is awash in the hypnotic colours and intoxicating sounds of West Africa.
Screening as part of BFI’s LOVE season.
Followed by the Opening Party in the Café/Bar. Ticket holders get priority entry.
