Ephraim is a young Ethiopian boy, the son of a farmer. When Ephraim’s mother dies, his father sends him to live with rural cousins, far from his drought-ridden homeland and where his only comfort is his pet lamb and companion - Chuni. The problem is Ephraim isn’t very good at farming. He does have one a hidden talent though - he is an excellent cook. But when his uncle tells him that they have to sacrifice his beloved pet sheep for their next religious feast, Ephraim finds he is ready to do anything to save his only friend and return home with him by his side.
Handsomely shot in Ethiopia’s beautiful, mountainous countryside, this multi-layered first feature from director Yared Zeleke demonstrates a real depth to its characters and confidently places depictions of everyday Ethiopian life centre stage.
