Bob Fosse's stylish adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's memoir documents the exploits of naive but irrepressible American singer Sally Bowles and her friends, set amongst the moral decadence and sexual ambiguity of 1920s Berlin.
For cabaret star Sally Bowles (played magnificently in an Oscar-winning performance by Liza Minnelli) the point is to laugh and sing and live forever in the moment. Alongside embarking on a fling with a bisexual writer (Michael York) she tries to keep the champagne flowing despite the disturbing rise of Nazism that is threatening to put a stop to their relentless pursuit of pleasure. And throughout the festivities are overseen by a master of ceremonies (Joel Grey) who’s determined to keep the merriment going, whatever the cost.
Containing ageless musical numbers and a stunning finale that confirmed unmistakably Minnelli as one of the great musical performers of our time, Cabaret is one of those musicals whose cultural and stylistic influence extend well beyond the cinema. It’s also brilliant, gaudy, show-stopping, and utterly lavish. Divine decadence, darling!
We’re getting a new kitchen in December
