Mara Wilson stars as Matilda, a brilliant, super clever girl neglected by her stupid, self-involved parents - one a crooked car dealer (Danny Devito, who also directed), the other a bingo junkie (Rhea Perlman). Ignored at home, Matilda escapes into a world of reading, exercising her mind so much she develops telekinetic powers. And it’s just as well: when she’s sent off to a horrid school headed by the sadistic, Olympic hammer-throwing Miss Trunchbull, her abilities mean she doesn’t have to get mad to get even. A delightful and funny tale that sees the world from a kid’s-eye view.
