An east-west meeting of musical minds is at the centre of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Indian filmic odyssey in the company of Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead), Shye Ben Tzur and the musicians of the Rajasthan Express.
In 2015 Jonny Greenwood, joined by his close friend and collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master) and Israeli musician and poet Shye Ben Tzur, went on a trip to Rajasthan in Northwestern India, where they were hosted by the Maharaja of Jodhpur. Their destination was the 15th century Mehrangarh Fort, where Greenwood (with the help of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich) and the Rajasthan Express - an amazing group of musicians culled from across the Indian subcontinent – began work on Ben Tzur’s new album. Assembling a makeshift studio at the fort, over the following three weeks the group created a joyous collaboration.
Junun - an alternate spelling of ‘junoon’ the Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Hindi word for ‘mania’ or ‘the madness of love’ - is discreetly captured by Anderson and his small crew, living and breathing the incredible music, the creative process and the close camaraderie of this special artistic alliance. A beautiful impressionistic mosaic of cultures and a one-of-a-kind sonic experience, this is pure filmic magic with music that will blow your mind.
Junun will be preceded by a special 35mm screening of Daydreaming (Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson, 2016, 6min 30sec) - a music video for the Radiohead song of the same name taken from their latest album A Moon Shaped Pool.
