Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool
classified 15Please note: This was screened in Jan 2018
Annette Bening and Jamie Bell vividly bring to life the intense love story between Hollywood icon Gloria Grahame and her much younger lover Peter Turner in this bracingly romantic film.
Gloria Grahame (Bening) was the Oscar®-winning star of The Bad and the Beautiful, played Violet in It's A Wonderful Life and Ado Annie in Oklahoma amongst many other iconic roles including The Big Heat and In A Lonely Place ( which we are screening as a double bill between Mon 1- Thu 4 Jan). Come the 80s, however, her days of stardom were behind her, and she was treading the boards in Liverpool while trying to suppress worries about her health. It was here she met Peter Turner (Bell), 28 years her junior, and they fell in love.
Adapted from Turner's own memoir about their time together, this is a moving study of a love story filled with humour, passion, and a rare insight - Bening and Bell are both perfect in their roles and we'd be surprised if they didn't get awards nods of their own for their performances.
