Ahead of the screening Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury will be in conversation to share their experience of developing the score for Alex Garland’s visually stunning sci-fi masterpiece. Ex Machina blurs the boundaries between human and artificial intelligence and asks what moral responsibilities we assume once we build sentient machines. Destined to become a cult classic, with its Oscar® winning visual effects, this is one of the most memorable and complex science fiction films of the last decade.

Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a 24-year-old coder, wins the chance to spend a week at the mountain retreat owned by the reclusive CEO Nathan (Oscar Isaac) of the world’s largest internet company. At the remote location Caleb becomes part of an experiment and must interact with the first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot woman (Alicia Vikander).

Under the gaze of CCTV, Caleb interviews Ava – she’s already passed a simple Turing Test - and finds himself not only impressed by her intelligence but increasingly attracted to her. However, as Nathan's and Ava’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, Caleb is forced to question the ethics of the experiment. Building to a grippingly claustrophobic ending, this thought provoking film slickly explores the morality and threat in creating artificial intelligence.
