part of Layered Realities Weekend 5G Showcase

Event

Please note: This event took place in March 2018

Sun 18 March - 09:00 Snow update

Morning all. We are hoping that today's experiences will happen - Millennium Square is gritted and we will update when we know more. Thank you!

As part of the Layered Realities Weekend 5G Showcase we are presenting two of our Playable City Commissions; Stop, Smile, Stroll and Shadowing which play with the idea of Layered Realities and the ways technology can bring new life to our cities.

Stop, Smile, Stroll

Created by Hirsch and Mann

Location: Millennium Square (at the intersection of Explore Lane and Millennium Promenade by the Ibis)

Stop, Smile, Stroll, winner of the 2016 Playable City Award, is a playful intervention at pedestrian crossings that brings strangers together for a moment of shared fun while breaking the mundane ‘stop and walk’ routine. This will be the first time that members of the public will be able to play with the specially commissioned piece in a 'real traffic' environment.

When can you see Stop, Smile, Stroll? Stop, Smile, Stroll will be operating between 14:00 and 20:00 on both Sat 17 and Sun 18 March in Millennium Square next to the Dome.

Shadowing

Created by Chomko and Rosier

Location: Anchor Square (by the cashpoint near We The Curious)

Winner of the 2014 Playable City Award Shadowing gives memory to city street lights, enabling them to record and playback the shadows of those who pass underneath. When the sun goes down in Millennium Square magical shadows will appear beneath one of the city's street lights revealing traces of those who walked by before. The streetlight will come on and traces of those who have passed by will be played back as shadows, re-animating the space after dark. Shadowing offers an exploration of the disconnectedness that technology can create between strangers, the role of light in creating a city's character, and asks us to reflect upon the unseen data layers that pervade our contemporary urban spaces.

When can you see Shadowing? - After dark on Sat 17 and Sun 18 March in Anchor Square.

What is Playable City?

Playable City puts people and play at the heart of the future city, re-using city infrastructure and re-appropriating smart city technologies to create connections – person to person, person to city.
