Are You Now or Have You Ever Been..? Sunday Brunches
Please note : this season finished in Jan 2016
"Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?"
Was the question which terrified and systematically ripped through Hollywood in the 1950s. It was asked by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), which fed on the hysterical American fear of Communist subversion of the post war and cold war era. Hundreds were called to testify about their so-called 'communist affiliations' and Hollywood was a particular focus: if witnesses refused to cooperate by naming names, they were blacklisted (effectively banned from the movie industry), and if they were 'friendly witnesses' reputations could just as easily be destroyed.
To tie in with the release of Trumbo (Opening on Fri 5 Feb), the upcoming Bryan Cranston-starring biopic of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (who was famously blacklisted yet still worked - and won Oscars® - under pseudonyms, and who finally got his screen credit for Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus), we present a series of films inspired by Hollywood's most notorious witch hunt.
