What A Glorious Feeling: Musical Brunches
Please note : this season finished in Jan 2017
Throughout the 1930s through to the early 1950s The Musical was in its golden age. But one brand of musical towers head and shoulders above every other: Metro Goldwyn Mayer. The mere phrase conjures up a string of iconic images, and between 1939 and 1959 MGM took the musical genre to a new level. Meticulously crafted works of art, they offered pure unadulterated escapism and complete and utter joy. These are movies that endure.
To celebrate the release of La La Land (opening Fri 13 Jan) throughout January come and revel in a selection of some of the finest musical productions to emerge from the MGM stable. Including the mesmeric Fred Astaire and Cyd Cherisse partnerships in The Band Wagon (Sun 1 Jan) and Silk Stockings (Sun 8 Jan); Gene Kelly as an American in Scotland in Vincente Minnelli’s Brigadoon (Sun 15 Jan); the superb marriage of music, colour and style that welcomed the arrival of the Show Boat (Sun 22 Jan); to probably the most treasured musical in the history of cinema - Singin' in the Rain (Sun 29 Jan).
As Gene Kelly sang in the 1951 MGM extravaganza An American in Paris, “who could ask for anything more?”!
