On The Margins: Cartoonists, Satire and Democracy
Please note : this season finished in Dec 2015
This weekend of screenings examines the role of the cartoonist and satire. We explore the imagination of one of our most celebrated and distinctive cartoonists/artists Ralph Steadman and the contemporary role of cartoonists whose visions can sharply illuminate debate as well as sometimes courting controversy.
Our focus is the hugely influential artist Ralph Steadman whose extraordinary exploding inks and artistic style, challenge classical aesthetics and boundaries of what art is. He is not only a consummate caricaturist, but also a great illustrator and author. We kick off with perhaps his best known collaboration, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Sat 5 Dec 20:40) for which Steadman illustrated Hunter S. Thompson's groundbreaking book and designed the film titles for Terry Gilliam's riotous cinematic adaptation.
For No Good Reason (Sun 6 Dec, 14:30) filmed over 15 years and narrated by Steadman’s long-term friend Johnny Depp, takes a closer look at the man himself, the anguish that often comes with the creative process, and the journey to his success – a trip which Steadman himself describes as a tale of wild ambition.
To conclude the weekend Stéphanie Valloatto’s celebrated documentary Cartoonists: Footsoldiers of Democracy (Sun 6 Dec 12:00) looks at the lives of twelve cartoonists from all over the world and the bravery with which they continue to pierce oppressive regimes through their art despite often at times, tragic consequences as they struggle with the themes of control, paranoia and fear.
So please join us for this weekend of screenings and shorts and get an enthralling insight into the lives of these incredible artists. People who arguably not only have the same creative skills as classic artists but who are recurrently found on the margins of the mainstream.
