Oli and Rachel swap between fact and fiction as they chronicle the Museum of Bristol’s Roman Roots project.
The Museum of Bristol ran a project called Roman Roots in which young people investigated the ruins of a Roman villa in Lawrence Weston. This workshop marked the culmination of the project, and the stories incorporate what was learnt and the activities involved in the project.
Hello everyone. were here today to tell you of what has been happening in the past, ha ha, recently a group of teenagers have been thrown out of their day-to-day routine, to rediscover the past. Over due course these teenagers came to name this project “the roman roots”, but they were not alone in the far not to distant future a doctor had discovered, what these teens have been doing and decided to verify their findings. his name was DR Loo he and his assistant Lav, travelled to roman times and made a documentary of what life was like. lets just say it was a brutish time and leave it up to your imagination, punishment was cruel, much like today if you stole something the machines wouldn’t bleep and you’d get caught, but you would be missing your hands. a bit clumsy if you ask me but they were cut off and taken away from you.
During all of this, the teenagers have been excavating an actual factual site, and found roman structures. At that moment the doctor and his assistant Lav, came and landed right in the middle of the site. They took a look around the site knowing fully well that professionals were restoring it. They went inside the villa, staring at the dark vivid colors decorated on the walls, Lav turned around and walked right into a overgrown cobweb “EEEEWWWW”, the doctor noticed there was heat coming off of the floor. “oh woooooow it’s come fully equipped with a Hypocaulst system to heat the house up”.
“is that smell coming from you?” Lav asked holding her nose.
“Well i think i should take a bath then, dont you” he replied jumping into the circular tube in the floor.
“Why is there two tubey thingies?”
“Well one of them is for hot and the other for cold water” he replied knowledgeably. Lav sat down on the floor noticing the detailed mosaics which covered and decorated the floor with colorful patterns.
The doctor showed the teenagers the documentary he made, and
they found out what the romans ate an they were really gross, and they should really have eaten healthier, but they ate stuffed door-mouse, larks tongues and peacock brain. not my particular favorite type of food, but were a few years apart.
After seeing this piece of extraordinary evidence and they wanted to show it to the world, so one of them thought up a play. they made a dead line for the play and then they performed it on the open day of the villa. Many people were intrigued by what was going on and decided to watch the reenactment of life in the roman times.
