This story was made at the Theatre Orchard “Storyshed” workshop with young people from Priory Community School, Weston-super-Mare, and adults from Somerset Racial Equality Council’s Friendship group with funding from www.media-box.co.uk
The workshop was led by Liz Milner, Clodagh Miskelly and Paddy Uglow (CreativeMedia.org.uk), and was supported by Watershed.
A parallel Design/Technology project at Priory School to make ‘story gadgets’ for the Storyshed installation was led by Tarim from the Pervasive Media Studio – www.pmstudio.co.uk/collaborator/tarim
There I was getting my uniform ready / ironed and dusted off. I then put it on knowing it’s going to be an important day. Then we all went to the armoury to find our instruments ready. So we got them on and fell in outside the train station. As a squad. The time was getting closer and scarier. We watched the police close all the roads ready for us. The band started to play some tunes on the bugle, snare drum, bass drum and the xylophones. Then we marched off through town in front of everyone. Everyone arrived at Grove Park; I was nearly at my spot. The guard did their ceremonial drill with the rifles. Loads of people put down poppies and reefs. I knew my part was coming up. We had the 2-minute silence and I played the last post, which was scary but went well. My part was over. I knew the day was almost over as we turned around and marched back through town. We arrived back at the unit and got freshened up after a long, tiring but memorable day.
