This story was made at a five-day community based digital storytelling workshop led by Dani Landau, Clodagh Miskelly, Penny Evans and Carolyn Hassan. Participants were members of Knowle West community groups.

The course took place at Knowle West Media Centre during June 2005 and was supported by Bristol’s Museums, Galleries & Archives.

[Bird sounds]

I first used a digital camera in 1998. I was hooked – no worries of having to buy film or have developing done. I took many family friends and holiday photos. This led me to my present interest of flowers and wildlife. My favourite is a pheasant: one posed for me on Brownsea Island in Poole, Dorset. This bird inspired me to capture wildlife in some of the most beautiful parts of the world, such as the puffins of Skomer Island, Pembrokeshire – I love them.

Egrets, herons and storks in the Dominican Republic, vultures in Cuba and pelicans in Venezuela. Even those on my own doorstep such as the chirpy robin, greenfinch and sparrows and, of course, the squirrels.

Living on a housing estate can be harsh, and fleeing to the coast or the countryside, for me, is pure escapism.
