Lawrence
What does a seven-year-old think about living in Bristol? As part of BBC Bristol’s Through My Eyes series Lawrence from Knowle tells us how he sees the city. He takes us on a journey which includes castles and dog mess.
Looking at Bristol through the eyes of a child can throw-up some surprising thoughts.
Lawrence is a imaginative and completely adorable seven-year-old who lives in Knowle with his three sisters, brother, mum and dad.
His favourite place in his house is on his balcony outside the kitchen and here Lawrence can see Bristol.
One thing he loves to do on the balcony is daydream - he imagines his garden to be a medieval setting with a castle and smelly peasants.
If Lawrence is feeling particularly imaginative, his mum and dad’s compost heap turns into a Dalek and the garden transforms into a scene from Dr Who!
Getting bored just isn’t an option for Lawrence as he lives near everything he needs to visit and he likes most things about where he lives…
“The bad thing about Bristol is the dog muck and the owners don’t clean up the dog poo.”
“I’m going to write a letter to Tony Blair when I’m older and say ’I demand more cleaners to clean up this muck’.”
Another of Lawrence’s favourite places is Clifton Suspension Bridge. It has inspired Lawrence to want to be an engineer like Brunel.
“I want to be like Brunel, I want to make things, sometimes I pretend I am him and once I made a model of the suspension bridge.”

My name is Lawrence, and I’m nearly seven. I’m sitting in England, in Knowle, in Bristol in my house. I’m sitting on my balcony outside my kitchen and it’s one of my favourite places to sit in the house because it’s really nice just to be outside and getting fresh air and I can see like nearly all of Bristol.
When I’m just daydreaming, just imagining things, it’s not normal – it turns into medieval times instead: churches and things… there’s churches and there’s load of knights galloping down and I imagine that big building’s like a prince’s tower. Our garden’s much bigger, it’s like a really big courtyard and you can see lots of really smelly peasants walking down, walking down the street.
Sometimes I don’t imagine it medieval, sometimes I imagine it like spacey and Dr Who. I imagine my compost heap: ‘cause it looks a bit like a dalek I think it’s a dalek.
Bristol should improve… I think they should get more cleaners ‘cause like some car parks are really dirty and people keep on throwing litter everywhere, and I think they should have more bins, more bins and people should try and buy compost heaps.
The bad thing about Bristol I think is there’s too much dog poo muck and their owners don’t clean up the dog poo. I’m going to write a letter to Tony Blair when I’m older and say “I demand more cleaners to clean up this muck.”
I’m really quite creative, but I’m not creative like arty type of craft. I like building things, like I make castles and sometimes I pretend I’m Brunel and I build them. Once I made a building of the suspension bridge. I really really like it because I really like going on the suspension bridge, I don’t know why.
The best thing about Bristol is there’s loads of places to go and quite a lot of space. Like we live quite near to everything – a place with everything we need. We live really near supermarkets and I really like the cycle routes in Bristol, they’re really good.
You never really get bored in Bristol – there’s always something to do.
