Through the support of the Bursary, Nii Obodai came from Accra in Ghana to spend four months in residence in Bristol from April - July 2007. The residency was initiated to support an international artist in Bristol through the Bursary and develop links between Bristol and Ghana - within the context of our shared histories with 2007 being 50 years since Ghana's Independence and 200 years since the abolition of the Slave Trade Act. Nii came to Bristol with a range of proposed ideas including exploration of his past experience spending time at a London boarding school and themes of spirituality and landscape however, his experience and response to Bristol was the main starting point in shaping his ideas. Nii is a photographer and was also interested in experimenting with digital video during his residency. During his time spent in Bristol, Nii researched and developed new ideas and work which explores food and its relationship to behavior and peace. He began development of a documentary film which he intends to continue working during 2008. |
