Based in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyneside Cinema opened on 1st February 1937. Currently based in Gateshead Old Town Hall while the Pilgrim Street venue in Newcastle is being given the big Heritage Lottery treatment, Tyneside Cinema not only screens a range of contemporary and classic films, it organises the Northern Lights Film Festival and develops a range of education and outreach work.

The second programme of Kawamoto’s short films celebrates the fantastic, the mystical and the arcane, including Kawamoto's first film after returning to Japan, Breaking of Branches is Forbidden and the spiritual journey of The Trip.
Sun 30 March
Set in Japan in the mid-8th century when Buddhism was introduced from China, this story of a battle fought between the spiritual and material world represents the crowning achievement of Kawamoto’s creative practice.
