Delib is a digital democracy company. They help organisations use the internet to connect people with decision-making. They've helped a diverse range of public sector organisations including: NHS, BBC Trust, Defra, European Parliament, Department of Homeland Security, NAPA, DoH, Cabinet Office, Bristol City Council, London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, Macmillan Cancer Care.

I Heart My City

Delib set out to create a map-based visualisation of the correlation between historical council spending and quality of life metrics, to reveal in a personal, localised way, the good work the council does to improve Bristol’s residents’ lives.

Using a selected set of Happiness Performance Indicators (HPIs) representing spending areas (e.g. parks, greening initiatives, child care, sanitation, maintenance), the map was intended to display what goes on at a hyper-local level. It aimed to transform the public’s relation to spending data through the use of positive language, friendly design and simple, social interaction.

Acquiring hyper-local data that correlated to Council spending proved tricky, so during development, the project evolved into a data visualisation that compared Council spend across the then newly formed Local Enterprise Partnership, including Bath, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bristol.

The project threw up some interesting questions about accessibility of open data and a need for consistency of captured sets across different Councils. These are conversations Delib have continued beyond the end of the scheme.

I heart my city. First steps.

At Delib we like to get people talking and sharing opinions. This project will be no different, but in it’s essence its a data visualisation tool, hopefully one with a difference. It’s intended to inform, provoke, and transform the public’s understanding of council spending data through the use of upbeat language, friendly design and social interaction. This project started with a single thought: ‘How do we tell a great story with the data, make it relevant for the people of Bristol and Delib’. After few a period of percolation, ‘I heart my city’ began to take shape.
