A few weeks back we were able to meet with Artistic Director of Graeae Theatre Company, Jenny Sealey with our Push Me team and film her in the gorgeous grounds at the Geffrye Museum in East London where she spoke to us about her Unlimited Commission, The Garden.
Written by Alex Bulmer and co-directed by Grant Mouldley of Strange Fruit, the piece was first staged in the ‘green and pleasant land’ of a deconsecrated churchyard in the heart of Greenwich in 2010. The piece will be revived this summer and staged at The South Bank Centre as part of Festival 2012.
Jenny has a busy summer ahead with several high profile moments that are pulling her in many directions; not least her role as Co-Artistic Director of the Paralympic Opening Ceremony.
It’s evident that The Garden holds a special place in her mind’s eye, however. She has reputation for telling untold stories of people’s lives and putting those out there for us all to enjoy and this is no exception. What better a vehicle than having her performers on 5ft sway poles: crafting hypnotic tales in the air for us all to enjoy.
We’re working on doing something a little different with Jenny’s first Push Me film so have held back on what we can show you from the shoot. We want to unwrap Jenny’s unique vision for the piece: tapping into what inspired her to first plunge her hands in the soil and what she found there.
