Hello! Rife Magazine ceased publishing new work in July 2022.

We've kept the magazine online as an archive and hope you'll still continue to enjoy all of its contributions from the last 8 years.

What makes a truly great news video that people want to watch? If you want to know that and how to get into video journalism, whatever your background? Well, our upcoming FREE masterclass is for you if you’re aged 16-24.

Here’s some details…

WHEN IS IT?: Thursday, 16th October 2014, 6.30pm–8pm (places allocated on first come first served basis)

WHERE IS IT?: Inside the Watershed in the Pervasive Media Studio Events Space.  Find your way up through the bar and follow the signs for Pervasive Media Studio, then ring the buzzer.

The talk will start at 6.30pm sharp and there will be plenty of time to ask questions afterwards. If you have any specific questions about your own work then it would be good to prepare those.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?: Our guest speaker, Dekan Apajee (tri-media journalist with a track record of broadcast quality content such as the London 7/7 bombings and the 2012 Olympics for the BBC and various other platforms ) will be talking you through his career from how he got into it to where he is now.

Whether you’re already creating and presenting your own material or interested in developing this craft he’ll cover

  • What is Video Journalism?
  • Finding that story and how to get started
  • What to do with your big idea – structure and audience
  • What you actually need to make work, and don’t forget to plan

WHO IS THIS FOR?: Aspiring vloggers, Youtubers, video producers, film makers, writers, journalists and bloggers who want to meet an industry professional, get real-life advice, network with other like-minded souls and get a foot in the door.

WHO IS DOING THE TALK?: Dekan Apajee is an extremely successful video journalist, presenter and producer with over ten years experience working at the BBC.

During that time he’s working for various news departments and also made the jump to programmes, having earned a director credit for his work on BBC comedy, Twenty Twelve.

He’s a strong advocate for young people, having founded Allsortz Open Mic in Shoreditch, given a talk for TedXYouth and is also a non-executive director for the Youth Media Agency. Dekan currently works as freelance media consultant and trainer.

WHAT NOW?: It’s free , but we’d appreciate it if you emailed us to let us know you’re coming. You can also apply via Ideastap and become part of their network by registering via this page.
