Molly’s Year Told Through The Magic Of Cats
Molly has had a very busy year and is reviewing it for us all through the medium of cats. Cat vines, cat gifs, cat videos – there’s a cat for every major life experience she’s had this year.
2014 has been a busy year for me(ow). I am one of thousands of young people who have finally cut the rope from free education and have been lumbered out into the big wide world to learn more about being an adult. I’ve reviewed my year using the only way I know how – cats.
Because cats get me. They really get me.
Finishing school forever
I finished sixth form back in summer and what a relief it was to have completed the final stages of free education but the downfall was not knowing what to do next. Cats land on their feet and will usually climb back up from every fall. So every time you may feel a bit lost then think cats.
Going to a festival
Although I didn’t look as classy as this cat, I did feel as sassy when I went to Reading Festival. Reading Festival was full of late-teen, post-exam, party goers who are into ‘alternative’ music. It was a great new experience being able to watch a handful of your favourite bands on one day surrounded by a crowd of thousands to share the exciting atmosphere with.
Learning to drive
Mirrors, signal, manœuvre. Sounds easy? Well, it’s not when you also have to control the clutch as well as the gear as well as the steering and the other pedals. But once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty fun. Driving = more freedom and less buses which is great but it all comes at a cost. Having a driving licence can also be useful when applying to jobs which involve travelling from place to place but walking, cycling and some buses are just as efficient transport.
Getting better at learning the keyboard
With a lot of free time on my hands over the summer, I decided to try and learn the keyboard a bit better. I’ve always tapped the keys a little at school, nailing ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ and the Titanic theme but I knew it was time to move on from those easy classics. Now I can play ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and ‘Enter Sandman’. So rock n roll.
Exploring the Bristol nightlife
Rock music on a boat? I’m there! As I am old enough to be a responsible adult, I am able to check out some of Bristol’s cool music venues to party in. By the way, if you’re under 18 there is no chance of getting in these club nights as security is everywhere. But you can check out some under 18 club nights here.
Friends leaving for uni
Deciding to not go to university means that I’ve had friends say goodbye to Bristol (until they come back in their time off). The change is quite noticeable and I’ve realised this is the point when there really is no going back to school with them to have a laugh – and of course work very hard… It’s a real step forward in life that everyone will go through at some point and although it seems a bit daunting at first, you soon grow with it.
Starting the world of work
Finally, the last major part of my 2014 but the start to a whole new stage in my life: the world of work. After panicking about what I will do once my friends have gone to university, I was lucky enough to find somewhere to work for a six whole months.
If you ever feel stuck with finding something to do then I highly recommend volunteering – not only does it allow you to learn if you want to go into a particular area and learn working life skills, it allows a potential employer to see that you have commitment, punctuality and a general interest in the area. Paws up all round.
What was your year like? Did you feel it flew by? Did you also leave school? Let us know @rifemag
