Pick of the Week: Sexual Health Drop-In
Find out what’s on the Rife Guide this week, including a sexual health and relationship advice session.
We all know that there are some things that are hard to talk about – especially when it comes to the most personal and intimate stuff. But talking about sex and relationships is really important to make sure that you’re ready to have happy, respectful relationships, and safe, enjoyable sex. Talking to friends might raise more questions than answers (especially if you can’t keep up with the latest slang), and talking to parents might feel difficult or embarrassing. So, here’s a solution: a free, confidential session with a professional.
Each week, Southmead & Henbury Family Practice opens its doors to young people, to offer help and advice about sexual health, contraception, pregnancy and relationships. You don’t need to be having sex to attend the session – you can just go to talk everything through, and ask the questions you couldn’t ask anyone else. If you need them, free condoms are available. It’s vital you use contraception every time you have sex, to protect yourself and your partner from Sexually Transmitted Infections including Chlamydia and HIV, and to prevent an unplanned pregnancy.
If you’re under 25, you’re eligible to get free condoms from your local health centre, through 4YP’s C-Card scheme. Here’s Jon to explain what the scheme is and why you should get involved (hint: it’ll save you a load of cash).
The drop-in sessions take place on Mondays at Southmead & Henbury Family Practice. The sessions are free and there’s no need to book – just drop in as and when you need help, advice or contraception. Full details of the session can be found here, on the Rife Guide.
If you don’t live in the Southmead or Henbury area, or you can’t get to the session, you can talk to advisors from Brook and 4YP online and on the phone about sex and relationships. You can also drop into Central Sexual Health Clinic (just up the road from Cabot Circus) at any time for free condoms, check-ups or a chat. The C-Card is available at doctor’s surgeries and health centres all over Bristol – here’s a massive list of them. So there’s no excuse not to keep yourself safe when it comes to sex!
