Playlist: Dance Study Break
This exam season, Ailsa gives you some tunes to get up from your desk and get down to.
Studying is important but study breaks are important too. It’s great to get up from your desk and move around a bit to get blood flowing to parts of your body other than your brain again. And what better way to do that than letting loose to some cracking tunes? Here’re some of my favourite songs that help me transform my room from library to a bangin’ club so exclusive that only I am allowed in.
Get warmed up with Flo’s magical voice and let all those facts and figures drop away – temporarily – as you get into the dancing spirit.
JD Samson & MEN are brilliant and very good for channelling angst and energy through. Have a listen.
There’s something more to me than all these songs
There’s my fingertips and the way I move my hips
And the way we turn to gold– JD Samson & MEN ‘Making Art’
Grimes is always a good one for indulging in some angst in a sparkly, silly, dancey way. This song is no exception.
Let Janelle’s moves inspire you and her music make your feet move. One day we’ll be as good. With enough practice.
Cause baby whether you’re high or low
Whether you’re high or low
You gotta tip on the tightrope– Janelle Monáe ‘Tightrope’
Take a break from being good studious girls and have a sing along with MIA. Everyone needs to let go sometimes.
A classic for taking a break not just from studying but from caring. Exams are important but your worth is independent of your results. Exams do not decide if you are a good or bad person. Repeat that over and over to yourself as you jump up and down screaming.
You’re on a different road, I’m in the milky way
You want me down on earth, but I am up in space– Icona Pop ‘I Love It’
And, finally, have a dance on your own with Robyn. Forever an inspiration with her weird, I don’t care what you think moves. The important thing with dancing is to mean it and forget about everything else.
Hopefully after all that you’ve relaxed your brain a little and warmed your body up a lot. Remember to keep on having regular breaks and that your friends will love you no matter how you do on these exams. And good luck.
