Top seven tips for applying to BFI NETWORK South West Labs & Programmes

Applying for Labs or programmes can be exciting, but also a bit daunting. Here are some tips to help make your application clear, focused and genuinely reflective of you and your work.

* Please note that these tips are not related to funding applications. For more advice on this please see our Short Film Fund Application Do’s and Dont’s blog post.

1. Always read the eligibility criteria (usually titled ‘Who this Lab is for’).

If you don’t qualify for the programme look at the other opportunities we offer or consider applying next time.

2. Do your best to spend time with your answers to avoid a rushed or vague application.

Whilst there are no minimum word counts, please use the space to fully address the question, talk about yourself and paint a picture of who you are and the work you want to make. If you’ve answered something in just one line, try digging a little deeper to give us a clear idea of you and your intentions.

3. If there are tutors or partners attached to the programme you’re applying for, talk about them.

What excites you about learning from these individuals or organisations? Give us a sense of what you will value from the experience of learning from them.

4. Tell us why you need this opportunity.

Clearly outline what this Lab/programme can do for you. If you feel like you need this opportunity for your career development, tell us exactly why. For example, is it to do with a skills gap that you have? Do you face barriers to career progression? Is it the perfect time for you to take the next step?

5. Be clear about your experience and the level you are at.

When assessing applications we need to know that you’re at the right stage for the opportunity. For example, you can use the space to shout about relevant, recent work that you’ve made; any successes or accolades; the impact of your films on audiences or communities; any previous mentorships, schemes or courses you might have completed that demonstrate a progression in your skills… We need to see that you are dedicated to your craft.

6. Read the questions thoroughly and try to cover all bases in your answer.

Check that you have answered all the questions fully, clearly and that you’ve included essential contact details (including your full name!). Check for spelling and grammar by using free software or asking someone else to take a look before you hit APPLY/SEND.

7. Familiarise yourself with the BFI’s core priorities.

While you might not be asked to directly address the BFI’s core priorities in your application, they are values our team must consider when assessing submissions. Keeping them in mind also gives you a head start if you choose to apply for funding from BFI NETWORK!

Please remember that you can always get in touch with the team at bfinetwork@watershed.co.uk if you have any access requirements and need assistance with an application to one of our programmes or Labs.

We hope that this rough guide has helped and encouraged you to take your next step and apply. Good luck!
