A Bill Douglas Trilogy

A Bill Douglas Trilogy

Cinema Rediscovered 2024

Season

Please note : this season finished in July 2024

To mark what would have been his 90th birthday, we present a series of special screenings celebrating the life, work and inspirations of filmmaker Bill Douglas.

His body of films may have been slim – his trilogy and Comrades (1986) - but he is rightly acclaimed as one of Britain’s greatest filmmakers and has had a significant impact on other film makers such as Lynne Ramsay and Lenny Abrahamson.

This strand includes Jack Archer’s new documentary Bill Douglas My Best Friend, Douglas's remarkable trilogy inspired by his own childhood, and Giuseppe Patroni Griffi’s rarely shown debut feature Il Mare (1962) which had a big influence on Douglas’s own filmmaking.

This strand is presented in partnership with The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum at the University of Exeter, the UK’s leading museum of moving image history, founded from the collection that Bill put together with his best friend, Peter Jewell.
