"Where do I begin, before I discovered Chuck Berry or made sense of Tina Turner for that matter, rock music was White music, then came this pint sized dandy who made the guitar holler, stroke, scream, and shout. I was hooked; am still hooked and that addiction began with Purple Rain.
More than the music, Purple Rain was the bible for any adult or adolescent who ever felt they were on the outside. Prince was our pied piper our guide, our guru. He showed us being on the outside is cool.”
- Edson Burton, Come The Revolution
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today… to celebrate the music and life of Prince, the greatest pop musician of his generation.
Join us for a Colston Hall tribute to the ultimate sexy MF take over, a purple people party with pre-film delights, a screening of 1984 classic Purple Rain, and an after party with a DJ set from the legendary Norman Jay MBE.
Arrive from 18:00 for the ultimate hors 'd oeuvres served up to get you in a Paisley mood: Alex Penfold and band, dance group Funk Supreme, and guests TBC. Then at 19:00 watch Prince aka The Kid on a (very) big screen in the big Hall: it’s time for Purple Rain, a glorious celebration of what might just be the greatest pop album of the 80s: the semi-autobiographical tale of a Minneapolis maverick musician navigating caught between romantic and musical rivalries a dysfunctional family and his own troubled identity. A genuine rock-cinema masterpiece, it introduced the world to When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U and, of course, Purple Rain.
It wouldn’t be a Prince Party without an after-party. After the credits roll join us for The Jam of the Year soul and funk food with the one and only DJ Norman Jay MBE. Norman knows a thing or two about rocking a Prince Party. So come on beautiful ones - dust off your raspberry beret, pull on those lace gloves, get out the paisley threads and ready those ruffs: Prince fans are the funkiest, so come prepared for a night to remember. Tonight, the music is glorious, the Purple Rain descends, the revolution is sexy, and we can’t wait to party like it’s… well… 1999.
Let’s go crazy!
