Black Star

Season

Please note : this season finished in Nov 2016

Musicians have long been a favourite subject for movies and many an actor has thought about being a rock star. Come The Revolution (a collective of curators, programmers and creatives from Bristol/Birmingham committed to exploring black life, experience and cultural expression through cinema) take a closer look at the importance of the music biopic in the creation of on screen black stardom in this series of late night events taking in the biggest stars of jazz, soul, rock, funk and hip hop.

Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson fight it out in the Oscar®-winning Dreamgirls (loosely based on Diana Ross and The Supremes), Forest Whitaker radiates as be-bop pioneer Charlie "Bird" Parker, the young actors in Straight Outta Compton capture the lightning-in-a-bottle vitality of their N.W.A counterparts, Angela Bassett goes river deep and mountain high as Tina Turner and, more recently, boundary breaking Andre Benjamin (aka Outkast's Andre 3000) gives an electrifying performance of (in his own words) "the coolest guy in the world" Jimi Hendrix.

Meanwhile, over at Colston Hall, we celebrate Prince's fantasy riff on his own life which catapulted the already successful music star to movie superstardom: yes, that's right, let's get funky at Purple Rain + Jam of the Year with a Norman Jay MBE DJ set. The music is glorious, the Revolution is sexy and the late Prince is still the ultimate can't-take-your-eyes-off-him star.

Ticket prices: £9.00 full / £6.50 concessions / £4.50 24 and under.
