Reframing Film Heritage

Reframing Film Heritage

part of Reframing the Archives

Talk

Please note: This event took place in July 2019

“You can’t change the material but you can change who’s looking” - Karen Alexander, Writer/Curator

Some of the most distinctive voices in curation and archiving open up a conversation on the potential of reclaiming and reframing archives. Expect provocations from guests Karen Alexander (writer/curator) and Ehsan Khoshbakht (Il Cinema Ritrovato co-director and writer/filmmaker whose Filmfarsi premieres at the festival) about how archives might impact on people’s experience and perspective; their own sense of self, place and memory as well as inspire debate, action and creative practice.

There’ll be inspiring case studies from organisations from across the UK that have found unique ways to to engage audiences and communities of interest in local archives via takeovers and place specific film experiences. There will also be space for networking with other cinema and archive practitioners as well as the wider industry at a networking lunch and drinks sponsored by STUDIOCANAL, Park Circus and MUBI.

Co-presented with BFI Film Audience Network (FAN) partners including Film Hub North, leading on major FAN wide film screen heritage activity with support from National Lottery, this is part of a series of initiatives aimed at inspiring and challenging the exhibition and archive sector to reframe film heritage in the context of BFI2022 priorities and beyond.

This event is free and is open to BFI Film Audience Network (FAN) Members only. To find out how to join BFI FAN, contact your regional hub: https://www.bfi.org.uk/FAN
