Stars Under The Radar
Black Star
Please note : this season finished in Nov 2016
Quality and celebrity do not always go hand in glove - this is true for any art form. Lacking bankable appeal, peaking too early or too late, hidden in niche projects whatever the reason there are Black Stars of outstanding quality whose work is widely admired by their peers but who fall in out and out of popular consciousness. This season of Sunday Brunches gives you a chance to relive and discover some of the best loved performers and performances that have graced the big screen.
More than an ass kicking under-dressed Blaxploitation heroine, Pam Grier proved she was a consummate actress in the role of Jackie Brown - one Tarantino's finest moments in large part due to her performance. Actor and director Forrest Whitaker is the master of reinvention so much so he is often forgotten and Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai captures hip-hop's fascination with samurai culture. She is widely remembered for her comedic roles, but Whoopi Goldberg stunned audiences with her authentic recreation of Ms Sealey in the film version of the Alice Walker classic The Color Purple. Before Eddie Murphy, or Chris Rock, there was Richard Pryor. Pryor understood the power of comedy to say the unsayable about race, sex, class and Blue Collar is one of his earlier, less known, works which displays the actor in one of his more versatile roles.
