Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece brings together two very different women on a remote island and observes the subtle shifts in power.
In the first of a series of legendary performances for Bergman, Liv Ullmann stars as a stage actor who has inexplicably gone mute, with Bibi Andersson playing the young, talkative nurse overseeing her recuperation. While isolated together, the women perform a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference.
Acted with astonishing nuance and shot in stark contrast and soft light by the great cinematographer Sven Nykvist, Persona is a penetrating, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth.
