Cornish director Mark Jenkin’s atmospheric and haunting new film Enys Man follows the slowly unsettled routine of a woman alone on an island off the coast of Cornwall as she monitors the growth of a rare plant. The stark sense of isolation leads to a blurring of her reality as the island’s past seeps into her present.
Jenkin’s portrait is the latest in a rich cinematic line of emotional journeys leading to transformation, revelation or renewal, and offers the starting point for this season which looks back on influential films of women at moments of great psychological change. The season includes Gena Rowlands’ uncompromising and intense performance in A Woman Under the Influence, Chantal Akerman’s newly critical poll-topping Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Ingmar Bergman’s psychological masterpiece Persona with mesmerising performances from Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson, and Alfred Hitchcock’s screen adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel Rebecca.
