Quite simply one of the greatest blockbusters of all time, witness Steven Spielberg's eye-popping, mind-bending, action-packed thrill ride on the big screen, as humans come up against prehistoric predators in the ultimate battle for survival.
Scientists Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) are among a select group chosen to tour a new island theme park – the brainchild of billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). The premise? What if dinosaur DNA extracted from mosquitoes trapped in amber allows extinct species to be cloned for the park? But what if these reconstituted behemoths don’t like being exploited behind electrified fences? Despite the obvious appeal of being able to see a real life dinosaur roaming the earth once more, it turns out that all those boring evolutionary arguments about dino-recreation being a ‘Really Bad Thing’ turn out to be spectacularly true…
The rebirth of CGI and the modern mega blockbuster? The reviving (literally!) of the monster movie? The cult of Jeff Goldblum? The inspiration behind a boom in real life DNA research (something scientists refer to now as “The Jurassic Park Era”)? An increased interest in palaeontology that launched many prominent careers in the field? The catchiest film score ever written? Jurassic Park produced all this and more. It remains sheer movie-making magic.
