Blood + Homage: The Cinematic Obsessions of Yann Gonzalez
Please note : this season finished in July 2019
Described by some critics as a sort of “queer Giallo”, visionary French director Yann Gonzalez’s Knife + Heart (opening Fri 5 July) blends melodrama, horror and comedy to create a kinky queer horror odyssey like no other that takes its visual and aural cues from some of cinema’s tallest genre giants.
A student and fan of experimental, exploitation and enigmatic cinema all the way from Sergei Eisenstein, Jean-Luc Godard, Abel Ferrara to Brian De Palma, Yann Gonzalez has always made shorts and feature films with an assured visual flair. Growing up, he saw cinema as an exciting secret - his parents forbid him to watch horror films (which made it all the more exciting when he finally sat down to watch the likes of Carrie and The Exorcist) and whilst studying film under the expert guidance of producer, writer and curator Nicole Brenez, Gonzalez developed a love for all modes and genres of filmmaking.
A master of homage with a killer eye for detail, our Sunday Brunches in July are a nod toward some of Gonzalez’s key influences – a cinematic trip across the varied landscapes of trash and exploitation cinema, the experimental and the underground to the European art house.
