Watershed Recommends: Fri 3 - Thu 9 April
Season
Please note : this season finished in April 2020
We know there are a LOT of recommendations about what to do with your 'spare' (ha!) time around at the moment. Our Cinema team have picked four films you can enjoy for free this week (you can also hear them in April's Podcast). Mark, our Cinema Curator, explains below:
"The cinema landscape has completely changed in response to the current situation with venues and film festivals all closing or cancelled for the next few months. Some festivals like SXSW in Austin Texas and FLARE in London kept engaging with audiences by migrating online. In fact SXSW continued with their juries and announced winners on what would have been the festival’s closing day whilst some of FLARE's programme was made available on BFIPlayer.
"Films, of course, were always out there online, on demand or on broadcast but their availability has become more prominent and much needed in these times of self-isolation. Cinema Producer Thea Berry and I have been looking through the myriad choices and come up with some films that are currently exciting us from Fritz Lang’s 1931 masterpiece M through to a documentary on Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki. They are easily available online and more often than not free to watch. This will be a new curated feature as we go through these non-cinemagoing but film watching days."
