“Film is like a battleground: There's love, hate, action, violence, death. In one word, emotions” from Pierrot Le Fou
Iconoclast Jean Luc Godard changed the way we would think about filmmaking, film, and cinema. His early work defined the radical spirit of the French New Wave and glimpsed a fresh freedom in film. These films embraced an improvisatory and innovatory freewheeling aesthetic full of cinematic life.
Godard would go onto chart a new relationship between film and politics: not simply making films about politics but making films politically. In his later career, he focused on dissecting often forensically (to the irritation of many of the established cinema world) the relationship between sound and moving image with intellectual rigour and playful abandon.
We celebrate the immense influence of Jean Luc Godard after his sad passing earlier this year with this short selection of his most famous early films.
