Return to Ozu
Please note : this season finished in Jan 2024
Join us for a Sunday season commemorating the 120th anniversary of the birth, and the 60th anniversary of the death, of Japanese director Yasujirō Ozu (1903 – 1963).
Widely considered one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, Ozu’s films are known for their deep and profound humanity, their understated style and poetic focus on family life.
Our short season begins with a new 4K restoration of his 1953 masterpiece Tokyo Story, regarded as one of the greatest films in the history of cinema, and continues with three more features all released within the last decade of his life.
With their elegance and sensitive attention to detail, all his films benefit from being enjoyed on the cinema screen. So start your year off right by discovering these late classics from the master Japanese filmmaker, or returning to them and appreciating them anew.
As director Wim Wenders says:
“If there were something like a sacred treasure of the cinema, that would have to be the work of Ozu.”
