Reframing Film

Cinema Rediscovered 2024

Reframing Film invites you to delve deeper into the themes of the programme and join in conversations with creatives involved in film programming, making, writing, archiving and more.

Award-winning freelance writer, broadcaster, and journalist on film and culture Christina Newland opens the festival with an Opening Keynote.

Then, from Lunchtime Talks to projection tours and cinema walks, there are plenty of ways for you to get involved; whether you want to get insights into the highs and lows of Margarita Cansino’s (aka Rita Hayworth) journey to stardom or explore the ethical and moral questions opened up by the inclusion of Chinatown in this year’s festival.

We are joined by some inspiring guests including influential film festival programmer, producer and author Lynda Myles for a special presentation of Mark Cousin’s documentary of her cinematic adventures. Ehsan Khoshbakht (whose Filmfarsi had its world premiere at Cinema Rediscovered in 2019) is also back with his latest essay Celluloid Underground, a moving account of preserving banned 35mm films in post-Revolutionary Iran.

We've teamed up with the Women’s Preservation Fund to present a trio of shorts by one of the first American indie women filmmakers to emerge from the Women's Movement Liane Brandon. We are also showing a rare 35mm film screening of The Student Nurses (1970) by Stephanie Rothman (the first woman to direct a Roger Corman production) which the Women’s Film Preservation Fund supported.

Our homage to Roger Corman doesn’t end there: look out for the special showing of his classic B movie Piranha (1978) the debut feature from Joe Dante from a script by John Sayles at 20th Century Flicks.

And, of course, there’s our famous closing night Film Quiz co-hosted this year by Watershed's Gavin Sunderland and Tom Besley.

For those of you that are hoping to get into film curation (and who knows perhaps pitch an idea for next year’s festival), join in the Other Ways of Seeing Lunchtime Talk.
