Had Bob Dylan only written a handful of songs like The Times are a Changing, A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall and Blowing in the Wind, he would have influenced songwriting in popular music.
Had he only recorded his Bringing it all Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde albums he would have influenced the sound of popular music.
But with now over 40 studio albums, 700 plus songs and a restlessly creative approach to both the studio and live performance, he is an influential cultural figure of whom Leonard Cohen, on hearing Dylan was to receive the Nobel prize for literature, said
“it’s like pinning a medal on Everest for being the highest mountain.”
This season of films celebrates the release of A Complete Unknown, and our line-up gives a glimpse of that mountain of creativity. Plus our very own Cinema Curator Mark Cosgrove will be giving an Illustrated talk Tangled up in Bob which reflects on the creative influence and influences of the mercurial, elusive and enigmatic song-and-dance man.
