Media Sandbox Showcase
On Friday 18th February, our final showcase kicked off at 2pm with an introduction from Victoria Tillotson, iShed Producer.
We then plunged straight into the B-Open strand, watching the three films and seeing Heather Craggs, Richard Wilson and Ian Anderson represent Delib, Mobile Pie and Overlay Media on the first panel. A discussion around open data was chaired by Media Sandbox Producer Mark Leaver.
Specific problems around opening up data were broken down. At the minute, councils produce data sets for internal processes making it difficult to decode and visualise: Delib revealed their findings and how they hope to encourage new data standards. The B-Open group's learning around the potential and monetisation of open data was also shared. Watch the panel discussion here: http://dshed.net/content/media-sandbox-showcase-panel-one-b-open

The pervasive experiences strand followed with four films screened and a similar panel set-up of Darius Pocha, Ella Romanos, Andy Sargeant and Adam Place representing Moksha, Remode, Mutant Labs and nu desine. The dialogue was prompted, cajoled and reigned in by iShed and Pervasive Media Studio director Clare Reddington.
The discussion opened up the commercial plans for each project, and how testing, re-iterating and being part of a digital community has accelerated the learning process. To close the discussion, each participant shared their greatest key point of learning. Media Sandbox has allowed these companies to innovate without restriction, and explore truly fresh pervasive media.Watch the pervasive experiences panel on DShed now: http://dshed.net/content/media-sandbox-showcase-panel-two-pervasive-expe...
The question and answer sessions were opened up to the audience and for the microphone-shy there was an opportunity to ask questions via twitter, using the #ms10 hashtag.

The fims are a dynamic way of showcasing the seven projects. Following the success of the Theatre Sandbox films, we see that this format ensures the scheme is widely accessible and leaves a legacy of learning and experience long after the curtain has closed on each annual scheme. Nicole Yershon closed the cinema event by summarising her time as a sandbox advisor, picking out key words and points of learning.

Project demos followed in Watershed's Waterside areas. Everyone got to try their hand at bio-feedback gaming, smelling their way through a story, finding out what local councils spend money on and pushing themselves over an obstacle in a wheelchair. As well as yelling nonsense at an iPad, testing the z-axis of the Alphasphere and planting virtual crops in the bar.
