Testing sound controlled mini-games
Mutant Labs tested their mini-games in Bristol this week. They spent Wednesday's lunchtime in the Watershed foyer asking individuals to try them out. I went along and had a go. The games use the range of your voice in an innovative way and are really fun. Although playing the games on my own in such a public space was quite intimidating, I soon let go of my inhibitions and cared more about completing them successfully than feeling embarrassed.
The great thing about the games is that they are triggered by abstract sound, so unlike voice-recognition, you can complete the games by talking nonsense, whistling, singing, screaming or making any noise that comes into your head. This also means the games are played differently by everyone, Andy and Rich said it was great to see all the unique reactions.
At the Media Sandbox event on Thursday we tried the games out as a group, which was even more fun. Comunally creating the right volume, pitch or speed of noise is as raucously liberating as it sounds.
